We offer two intercooler choices for the N55. This MMR High Performance Intercooler for the N55-powered BMW M135i I M235i I 335i I 435i improves power and torque output by substantially reducing charge air temperatures versus the OE cooling setup. Using a huge Bar and Plate stepped core, it provides almost double the core volume of the OE unit and a frontal area around 70% greater than OE, too.
The factory intercooler used on the N55 engines has proved to be unable to cope with the demands of higher power, hard driven cars, showing up as serious power losses during hard driving as air temperatures soar, and long recovery cool-down times needed.

Using a huge ‘Bar and Plate’ with a stepped core, our High Performance Intercooler provides almost double the core volume of the OE unit and a frontal area around 70% greater than OE, too. That’s a really significant difference. The stepped core itself uses internal turbulators to improve its cooling performance and the CFD optimised end tanks assist with maintaining the best possible airflow across the core.

We offer two types of Intercooler for the N55 Fx cars. As well as this ‘High Performance’ version, we offer our ‘Competition’ unit, which uses Tube and Fin construction. We recommend this High Performance version for most road applications, as its higher mass (that’s a good thing for an intercooler) gives greater thermal capacity for longer drives, and has the added benefit of being the cheaper option.

Due to the sheer size of this Bar and Plate core and a higher material ratio than our Competition core, this High Performance unit tips the scale at 11kg, but ultimately still provides the best solution possible when consistent power output and low air charge temperatures are required. Our development focussed on finding the ‘sweet spot’ of maximum IAT cooling versus minimum pressure loss. This has allowed us to achieve increased size without increased lag.
